Hair Consultations
These are the names of the places I am considering getting my hair done at.
1. Muoy: heard that she is great for weaves but have no clue how she is with relaxers
2. Sanctuary Salon Brooklyn
3. Rosalinda’s
Results of consultations:
1. Muoy: Initially referral was just for weaves. After visiting and talking to her, I decided to be a bit more patient, take my time and really research to find the best options for my hair.
2. Sanctuary Salon Brooklyn: When I first started researching adding a chemical to my hair, this salon was my first choice. Along the line, I decided against them, after calling and booking a consultation with the head stylist, because I didn’t trust that they would be able to handle what I wanted to do with my hair (i.e. a very very mild texturizer as opposed to a relaxer). Plus, since I also have to stick to a very strict regimen for my hair (i.e. salon visits, treatments, color, and the works), the salon prices are not pocket-friendly for someone on an entry-level salary.
3. Rosalinda’s: I am in love! Seriously, I had a great experience at the salon. I need to develop a whole post dedicated to my experience here. I pray I find time.
Lessons Learnt:
- It is best to have a clear goal in mind. This took me years (and I am sure the journey is not over and, horrors of horrors, might never be over) but by going natural, I learnt so much about my natural hair texture and saved a whole lot of money in the process (YAY!). The heartaches were plenty and I was not prepared when I first started but I am glad for all that, I learnt along the way.
- Once you have a clear goal in mind, read, read, read, and then read some more. With the advert of the Internet, it is not so hard to find all the information you need for your hair care needs (or anything at all for that matter).
- Take your time to visit and talk to the people who are will be working on your hair. This lets you get a feel for what kind of services they offer and if you can trust them with something that is so important to you.
- Be firm. LOL! Really, this one thing was a bit hard for me to do. I think I was scared to ask questions and say what I needed because:
- I did not know much about my hair (without chemicals). I relaxed my hair, not knowing the effects of chemicals on my type of hair, because it was what everyone around me did.
- In the past, I believed that any one who was called a professional haircare stylist knew what they were doing. Therefore, I would trust people with my hair without really taking the time to talk and ask questions.
Now I know more about myself, and have taken the time to learn how best to work with my type of hair, I am better armed to navigate the maze of all things hair while incorporating it into my own personal style philosophy.
What is that philosophy? Still working it out but it HAS to be based on simplicity and furgality.
